Topic 9 Concept Check

Role of Women- Women began to work inoffice jobs, war factories, and in the government. Women also helped by selling war bonds, donating blood, and reducing use of materials that could be used for the war.
Cause and Effect of use of the Atomic Bomb- The reason for dropping the bombs was because the Japanese were rutheless and they were going to keep fighting and it would lead to many deaths for U.S soldiers. The effects of the bomb include killing hundreds of thousands innocent civilians, leaving harmful radiation in which made Hiroshima and Nagasaki unhabitable and causing the Japenese to finally surrender.
U.S Foreign Policy Before, During, and After the War-
  • Before- The U.S was isolationists. We stayed out of the conflict in Europe because we did not wish to be involved in a war especially since the Great War ended only a few years prior
  • During- U.S was neutral at first. Only selling weapons to Britain in return for money and nothing else. Once we became involved this changed and we provided aid to allied countries.
  • After- We became very involved in other countries. We remained stationed in Europe and helped the damaged countries try to rebuild their citites and such
Effects of the War on Europe- Many countries in Europe contained many homeless people, and were as poverty striken as they were during the Great Depression. It would take many years for the population to grow back to what it was before the war.
Effect of the Pearl Harbor Attack- The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor which killed many innocent Americans caused the U.S to declare war on Japan in which Germany (ally of Japan) then declared war on the U.S.
Japanese Internment- People of Japanese desendence living in the U.S during the time of the war were forced into War Relocation camps. They were forced to sell their buisnesses and leave their homes to go into these camps. They were held in these camps for the duration of the war and many families were seperated from each other.
Neutrality Acts-
  • Embargo on arms sales
  • U.S battleships could not be armed
  • Americans could not travel on ships on countries at war
Purpose of Propaganda-The purpose of propaganda is to spread ideas or information in order to support a person or cause.
Rationing-To help the war effort at home, families would ration their food and other important materials like metal, rubber etc. They were told to save fat from foods to give for weapons. Also they were told to refrain to buy new products and to carpool to save gas.
Results of WWII- After the war Europe was left in ruins, and Germany was split into four sperate parts. The United Kingdom's position as a global power was lost and the United States and the Soviet Union became formidable world powes. The European Union and United Nations were formed and ulitimately it began what would later be the Cold War.
