The name of this song is called "Dear Mr. President" and it is by the artist Pink. This song was created in 2006 and this is important because this means that the president she is talking about in this song is George W. Bush. These lyrics tell a lot about what was going on at the time. Bush was a Republican who did not see agree with gay rights and this is challenged in the second line of this verse. Also gay  rights at this time just started to come into play which is very important. Another very important lie is the last one because Bush used to be an alcoholic. So not only is this a shot to his ideals but also right to his character. It was very bold of Pink to do so. This compares to songs during the Vietnam era because artists directly attacked the government and the soldiers like Pink is doing right now. They dont jump around the topic and speak in metaphors to which the listener does not understand what the sing is about, but rather state it directly and boldly attacks the opposing side

Media Makes the World Go Round

   Media is the mind of the public. How the media portrays a certain event is how we then view it. It is not purposely but rather subconciously and it is a great power in which they hold. But over the years the way major events like war are portrayed have changed. The Vietnam war is known to most as being the first war where the television came into play. Now news reporters can bring cameras and show everybody back home what their boys are up against over seas. This created a lot of bad publicity for the war. Many news stations would manipulate information recieved and convey it back to the people in a way that would turn even the most proud patriot against the war. Biased information greatly hindered support for the war and eventually forced us to retreat. So this forced a change. With the War on Terror going on now, things are different. Information is given and the writer can give an opinion but most of the time they just leave most of it up to the reader. It is open to interpretation which allows the individual to decide what they feel about it and which refrains from having a whole new generation up in arms about the current conflict.
  In conclusion, the media thinks for us. It can make up our mind on a subject without us even knowing anything about the other side and create an uproar across the nation. The power of freedom of speech is a great power to uphold

Vietnam Questions

I interviewed my father who was around the age of ten during the conflict and the following are the questions and his answers

1. When it was going on, were you for or against sending soldiers into Vietnam?
Response: I was against it
2. Which speciific event do you remember most vividly?
Response: The draft for sure. I remember hearing news about students ripping their draft cards which confused me at the time
3. In what ways did the war affect you?
Response: I had close family members enter the war. My close cousin enlisted in the Navy near the end of the war.
4. Looking back now on the war what do you think about it?
Response: I feel that the war was a waste of money and man power that could have been put to better use
5. Do you feel the media and pop culture changed your viewpoint on the war?
Response: Yes mostly because that is where my information about the war came from, which tended to be anti-war. In school we were not educated on the war

Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.

  These two men were very influential to the shaping of our country today. They helped change this country for the better. But how these two men did this was very different. Martin Luther King Jr focused more on civil disobedience and Malcolm X used violence to get his point across. Although I feel they are both equally important, I think MLK was more effective in his methodology.
  When I read quotes from MLK I felt more of a call to action. He was able to move masses of all kinds of people with his speeches and I personally felt he was more motivating. Also during the Civil Rights movement I feel that staying away from violence was the best way to obtain rights. The white population of America did not need another reason to hate African-Americans. Civil disobedience proved not only are African-Americans necessary to the economy which most white Americans did not believe but they also showed they are human beings who deserve rights without resorting to violence which would cause more harm then good.

Jena and Little Rock

  Racism is a factor in American culture that has existed from the start. Although the Civil Rights movement seems long gone, hatred between races still exists. In Jena High School racism is still very prominent. There was an incident there were 6 African-American students beat up a White student and now one of the 6 students is being charged with attempted murder. When I read the article about this I had mixed emotions. Without further research I am unable to determine whether the beating was severe enough to put on trial or it was solely due to racism due to the fact that the extent of the injuries suffered was not said. I also feel that the students who put up the nooses should have serious repercussions because that is a serious matter that is bluntly a hate crime. Lastly I feel that this whole thing was blown out of proportion. To me this was just a fight between children that maybe did not mean as much as the news and all the protesters made it seem. Yes I do see both sides of this. A boy got beat up by 6 kids. A 6 to 1 fight is not a fair fight to say the least, and they did bring this upon themselves by engaging in the fighting. And I do see that these kids that did the beating probably face utter racism everyday especially when the mass majority of the town is white, and I am sure the white kid who got beat up did something to cause them to do this to him. But then again maybe this is not my place to say anything since I do not really know what it is like to experience this level of racism. The problem at this school is just like Little Rock since the African-American students are the minority and are experiencing hatred from their fellow white students. Little Rock also caused major commotion in the media and around the country.

Television

   The invention of the television is a very important event to happen in history. It is something that every child can recognize and a modern society cannot live without. The television is changing how things get done and our source of entertainment. The newspaper is no longer necessary because we can get it all summed up very quickly and the art of theatre and ballet is becoming endangered because why go out to the theatre when you can just stay home and watch a show, and for a cheap price as well. Overall I think it has negatively impacted society. Daily exercise is something that rarely happens, due to the fact that people rather watch a show than go work out. America's youth is becoming increasingly heavy and exposed to explicit material which should not be seen. Television has also created a more violent youth. On television children and see fights and violence and wish to imitate these people because on the shows these people are "cool". It's affect on teens is even greater. Shows now glorify heavy drinking and show teen pregnancy as a trend rather something that shouldn't occur. As years go by, television gets more and more explicit and even younger children are exposed to this material. Where does the boundary go up as too much?

The Duties of a Housewife

Picture this. Mom in the kitchen cooking a nutritious dinner. Dad just stepping in the house from a hard day at work and the children in the living room playing. This is the picture perfect family right? In every idea of a picture perfect family the story can change. The children can be off in college or at a friends house. Dad can work at home or off relaxing and watching television. But where is mom? The view of a wife/mom tends to be the loving mother that tends to the family's every needs, cook, clean and at the same time always dressed nicely with a proper haircut and makeup. This unfair stereotype has existed for a long time and was further amplified in the 1950s with the invention of the television. I picked this photo to display the sexism against women, because it shows the women admiring the refrigerator. Now where is the man in this picture? Nowhere to be found. It is only showing the women in the kitchen because to many beliefs that is where they should be. It also shows the prim and proper women which is displays what the ideal woman should be. Sexism is still an issue that still exsists in today's society. It is only now becoming widely accepted to have the matriarch of the household to be out working and making a living and the matriarch can be home doing the cooking and cleaning. Although this is accepted it is still hard for the man to have the woman bringing home the money. And still women are supressed and treated unfairly. This view of women is something that will continue for many years to come and possible never completely change.

   It is winter time, the year is 1954 and everyone in the Smith household is fast asleep. The weather the past few days has been quite cold, but snow has yet to reach the town in which the Smith family lives. All of a sudden little Johnny and Susie are each awoken by their loving mother. She eagerly tells the children "come with me I have something to show you". The children and their beloved dog Shiloh excitedly follow her to the window and look outside. What they see outside is a winter wonderland. Their neighborhood is completely covered in snow and they see the birds outside in the iced covered trees chirping. McCarthyism Impact on Society- McCarthyism led to lots of communist propaganda, and thought to be unamerican activities were watched very closely, leading to paranoia among the people.
Communist "Witch Hunt" and Impact on Those Accused - The U.S government kept an eye on people especially people in Hollywood. Those accused of communist activites were arrested.
Space Race Impact on Government Policies- The space race caused more of the government's money to be put into education. Math and Science became priority. The Apollo program also cost the government 25 billion dollars.

Relationships of Suburbs, Automobiles, and Roads- In the 1950's more families moved into suburbs, where it was the norm to own more than one automobile. So in effect more roads were needed to compensate all the extra drivers on the road. In 1956 the Interstate Highway Act built 41,000 new miles of road.
Baby Boom- During this time a baby was born every 7 seconds. The causes of the baby boom included the end of 20 years of tough times (World War II and the Great Depression), and the removal of social and economic restraints that kept people from having babies.
Urban-Suburban Pattern- The Buisness disctrict is in the middle which is the Inner-City where the low-income families live. Outside the city is the suburbs where the middle income-families live. Outside of those suburbs are more suburbs where high-income families live.
GI Bill- A Bill that provided WWII veterans college or vocational education. As well as loans to start buisnesses/homes, and a year of unemployment compensation.
Expansion of Middle Class- The reason for the expansion of the middle class included low prices on goods and the invention of the credit card, which skyrocketed the amount of spending done around the U.S.

Topic 9 Concept Check

Role of Women- Women began to work inoffice jobs, war factories, and in the government. Women also helped by selling war bonds, donating blood, and reducing use of materials that could be used for the war.
Cause and Effect of use of the Atomic Bomb- The reason for dropping the bombs was because the Japanese were rutheless and they were going to keep fighting and it would lead to many deaths for U.S soldiers. The effects of the bomb include killing hundreds of thousands innocent civilians, leaving harmful radiation in which made Hiroshima and Nagasaki unhabitable and causing the Japenese to finally surrender.
U.S Foreign Policy Before, During, and After the War-

• Before- The U.S was isolationists. We stayed out of the conflict in Europe because we did not wish to be involved in a war especially since the Great War ended only a few years prior
• During- U.S was neutral at first. Only selling weapons to Britain in return for money and nothing else. Once we became involved this changed and we provided aid to allied countries.
• After- We became very involved in other countries. We remained stationed in Europe and helped the damaged countries try to rebuild their citites and such

Effects of the War on Europe- Many countries in Europe contained many homeless people, and were as poverty striken as they were during the Great Depression. It would take many years for the population to grow back to what it was before the war.
Effect of the Pearl Harbor Attack- The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor which killed many innocent Americans caused the U.S to declare war on Japan in which Germany (ally of Japan) then declared war on the U.S.
Japanese Internment- People of Japanese desendence living in the U.S during the time of the war were forced into War Relocation camps. They were forced to sell their buisnesses and leave their homes to go into these camps. They were held in these camps for the duration of the war and many families were seperated from each other.
Neutrality Acts-

• U.S battleships could not be armed
• Americans could not travel on ships on countries at war

Purpose of Propaganda-The purpose of propaganda is to spread ideas or information in order to support a person or cause.
Rationing-To help the war effort at home, families would ration their food and other important materials like metal, rubber etc. They were told to save fat from foods to give for weapons. Also they were told to refrain to buy new products and to carpool to save gas.
Results of WWII- After the war Europe was left in ruins, and Germany was split into four sperate parts. The United Kingdom's position as a global power was lost and the United States and the Soviet Union became formidable world powes. The European Union and United Nations were formed and ulitimately it began what would later be the Cold War.

A Different Perspective

   Watching the clips from the Shoah collection gave me a very different perspective than what I saw from before. I have only seen one other interview of Holocaust survivors and it was quite brief. Watching theses clips gave a more real feeling to an event that I have been so intruiged to learn about. This topic is so bizarre, I can not wrap my mind completely around it. The violence that occured in this time is so drastic and cruel, that to me it seems almost fiction. I have read much on the topic but nothing really amounts to watching someone give an eyewitness acount of what happened to them at the time. It saddned me to watch the clips because I was able to hear and see the pain of the person while they spoke of their experience. They were often happy in the beginning of the interview but as they spoke of some atrocities they soon became very solemn and a few broke into tears. To me this was eye opening. Although I was never in denial that this happened, I never fully got it. The emotion never welled up inside me when I read about it, and when I watched movies I would think "oh well its not real it's a movie" even when I knew it really did happen. So now I look through new eyes when I watch/read something about the Holocaust. I now see and feel the pain and think these were everyday people, people who felt pain just like me and you.

What We Don't Know Can't Hurt Us

To whom it may concern,
  
   Although many may think what we don't know can't hurt us, in actuality is can hinder us greatly. History repeats itself. There are common trends in history and in order to stop them we must learn from our mistakes so similar atrocities do not need to happen again. I am addressing you in order to convince you to keep every piece of history in the history books. The Rape of Nanking and the Holocaust were two huge acts of genocide committed during the second world war. Massive numbers of people died which in return makes these two topics very sad and gruesome. Teaching things like this is crucial. Students need to know what mankind has the ability to do. Students need to know so this they never allow their government to be controlled by corrupted officials. Students need to know that not everything is sugar-coated. The most unpleasing aspects of history are the ones we can learn from the most. It would be a crime to raise a generation of students who are naive to such tragedies. With the lost knowledge of the subject also comes with lost knowledge of the people lost. Millions of people who suffered and died will be lost in our memories. Those who wished for their story to be told for centuries so another soul would not have to suffer as they did will be lost. Taking away this chance to learn about something so impactful would be a regrettable one that may alter furture events greatly.

Just Look the Other Way

   Genocide is the annilhilation of a specific group of people. I agree that genocide is a horrendus crime and those who do it should be punished for doing something this heartless. But I do not feel it is the job of the United States government to stop it. As much as people wish to believe we are the world police, we are not. We should let the people involved deal with it themselves.
   To become involved with stopping an act of genocide with a group means great conflict. It will not be as easy as the president calling up the people comitting the genocide "hey can you stop this please? I really do not like what you are doing, it's definitely not the right thing to do." If you did that they would laugh and tell us to shove it where the sun don't shine. Rather fighting would begin and many American soldiers would die in a conflict that doesn't even involve us and the American people would be up in arms about that. Although this is my stance on the topic, I do support organizations against genocide and the help of refugees. Also if we are already involved in a conflict with a country and they are mass murdering a group of people, I think it is ok to be involved then. For example in WWII, we were already fighting the Nazi's and we also found the concentration camps, helping makes sense. It would be morally wrong to just turn you shoulder there when helping is within an arms reach.
   Getting involved with other countries problems in general is something I strongly urge against. Watching ourselves is just enough. So I feel with an instance such a getting involved with another country that is committing genocide, I feel it is better to be naive and ignorant and just look the other way.

• Mae Braddock. Wife of James J. Braddock. Although she does not agree with boxing due to the violence, but she her support is vital to her husband

A little help from my friends

  The group presentations we did in class taught me alot. Not only did I learn valuable information about some of the most notorious gangsters in our history but i also learned alot about planning and time management. When working in groups social loafing often occurs (people slack off and rely on the other group members to do the work for them). I will say that sometimes that kid is me but with a presentation like the one given I realize the vital need of complete and total participation from every single person to get the desired outcome that we all want, the A.
  Planning a project like this is something I am new to doing but I found very useful. In most cases I would just jump into the project whether it being a poster or a paper, but they never were their full potential. But with this planning system shown really helps keep the project on task and made it easier to know what to look for without just spitting out random information about the topic in an order that doesnt make much sense
  I also learned alot about Machine Gun Kelly. The stereotypical gangster of the 1920's to me is an Italian male who enjoys wearing pinstripe suits and lives in New York City. But to be a nortioius gangster you do not have to fit into that stereotype of commit any crimes for a matter of fact. Machine Gun Kelly was born to a rich family in Memphis Tennesse. He went to school for agriculture but dropped out to marry the love of his life and became a cab driver. He soon became a part of organized crime. He often boasted about many crimes he did not commit and in Alcatraz he was considered to be a model inmate. He got his name for the Machine Gun he carried even though he never shot anyone.
  Although whenever a student hears the word presentation, they run and hide due to the fact they are not the most fun thing to do, they really provide alot of information for the researcher. Looking up information is the best way to retain it and I felt that i honestly learned alot not just crammed and forget the next day. Projects like this let me know i can get by with a little from my friends.

No Way Out

  Alcatraz, located on San Francisco Bay, is known as being the jail that held some of the most notorious gangsters in U.S history. Before holding these criminals, Alcatraz was a military prison that was mostly used in the Civil War. In the early 1930's it turned into the max security prison that we all know it to be. In the 30 years that it was in use as a prison of the worst criminals we had in our country, not a single person successfully escaped. Why is that?
  Well for one this jail is on it's own little island. Also the harsh waters around the island made it even harder for prisoners to escape. Those who could not swim were out of luck, those who were able to swim could not overcome mother nature and the harsh waters, and in addition to that, the water was very cold so escaping is a nightmare. But the even though the odds were against them from the beginning, there were 14 attempts of escape from 36 prisoners. 23 were caught, 6 were shot and 3 were lost at sea and never found but it was presumed they drowned. If the worst criminals could not get out who could?
  Although it's time as a max security was short-lived, Alcatraz will live in infamy for all that happened there. Being admitted there was like a nightmare and trying to get out on your own was even worse. Even though most of them left Alcatraz within a couple years, Alcatraz never really left them.

Scopes Trial

  John Scopes was put on trial for teaching his high school class about evolution, in a classroom today, this is the complete opposite. Everybody has their own mind set on how people came to how they are today. Science and religion have never seen eye to eye and on this topic especially. But who's to say that either of these theories are more correct than the other? Nobody. There is not a single person that can tell you their theory is 100% correct, because we don't know. So in a school setting which do you teach? This is not a topic that you can just completely take away to never be discussed because that is not a logical idea. Picking just one doesn't seem right, so why not teach them both?
  Teaching both religion and evolution would be ideal because it leaves the student to believe what they want to believe. It gives them a choice and broadens their horizon of knowledge. By learning both they will not be ignorant to the opposing side. I feel this will ultimately end conflict with the topic, because now a choice is given.
  Of course actually accomplishing this is not something that can be done overnight. There is always that one person/group that doesn't like the outcome. But I feel this topic will not ever come to a happy conclusion. There are too many different thoughts on how we got here, and how all of this started. Because we honestly don't know mankind comes up with a plethora of different thoughts on the matter, and thats why this topic will never be fully resolved.

The story of Mary and Walter

   The year was 1926, the setting was New York City, and the guy was Walter. Walter was 24 years old, average looking and the big cheese of his family owned grocery store. His 33 year old brother was supposed to take control of the store but sadly his life was ended early due to the Great War. So now Walter is left the store and without much family, so he is a very lonely fellow. He never thought love would come his way and he would be alone forever. Well at least this was the case until he layed eyes on Mary.
   Mary was 22 years old and blond. She had long gams, and a chasis that was perfect. Walter crushed on her hard. To him she was the Bee's Knee's and the Cat's Meow. But word on the street was she was  bearcat, so Walter was unsure if she was out of his league. But loneliness had gotten to him too greatly, he went for it and asked her out for a date. To his utter suprise she gladly accepted his offer.
   It was friday night and Walter was now getting ready for his date. He was so nervous he was about to upchuck, but he kept his cool. He got dressed in his glad rags and looked very spiffy for this date. He picked her up and after he saw her looking all dressed up as well he became even more nervous because she was even more beautiful. But the night must continue. To his amazement, she was nothing like he expected. She was extremely quiet but at the same time she was very down to earth and Walter was able to relate to her very easily. The date goes great without any accidents and now Walter is taking her home. He is still very nervous and he walks her up her door, but before she walks in she asks him "are you alright? you seem quite nervous", Walter replies "yep I am berries. But I have to ask you why did you decide to go out with me?" Without hesitation she answers "same reason you asked me out", then she goes to Walter and plants one right on the kisser. From that moment they both knew that they were meant for each other. They have the handcuffs to prove it.

Wikileaks

 To whom it may concern,

    In recent weeks there has been uproar around the world due to a little website called Wikileaks. This website displays leaked information mostly about the war on terror in the Middle East and the purpose of this is to show governments for who they really are. To show the average person things that we never knew went on. Although on paper this may seem like a good thing, it has and will create more problems for us and our international affairs with other countries. Just because you have good intentions, it doesn't always mean it turns out as a good thing.
   The information on this website is strictly classified and this means that it is not meant for the average person to view it. The reason the government does not show us this stuff is because as a whole society cannot see things as gruesome and unbelievable like the footage they show. Also there is no reason to show this. What good does it do? None. The only thing it does is create conflict within our country and gives our enemies more of a reason to hate us. The majority of people in this world have not experienced the horrors of war and the duties they are required to perform in order to come out of situations alive and saves numerous of other lives. Yes innocent people have been killed by accident but that's the cost of war. The few that die do not amount to the numerous ones saved by the effort we put in there. What people must understand is the fact that the glamorized version of war is not the reality. Also that this is not the first time in a war that things like this have happened. With the addition of all the new technology we have, it is very easy to get this information out quickly and to many people. Nothing is good when all of the media becomes involved. So in order to keep out these terrorists who absolutely despise Americans and want to see us all perish, we must take care of things there first. Freedom and safety comes with a great price, and I think at times people forget about this.
    As you can see, something must be done about this website. The creator does as much damage as the terrorists in the Middle East, but just with a different method. He is endangering people's lives and can create a full out war. And what right does this man have? He is not an American. He has no part in this matter. Unfortunately there are no laws set up to protect us from this because this is the first instance of this we have seen. So maybe this is a lesson for us so we can have laws set up before things get out of hand. Not any one person should have the right to impact a nation as negatively as this man has done to us.

By Any Means Necessary

   If I were ever in a situation like the one given, I would use any torture method necessary to get this high priority information from these people. I mean cause when does asking politely ever work? Although I would rather begin with torture methods that mess with you psychologically, if that doesn't work you gotta do what you gotta. In wartime things like this is not unusual so doing it would not be out of the question, and it's not like the other side isn't doing the same, so I find no problem using the same methods. Of course it is not something right to do when you are harming another human being, but if there is a suspected bomb factory needed to be found, you are saving many more innocent lives that you are hurting.
  The repercussions of this could be, you may not get the needed information out of the detainee. Although in most situations torture gets needed information quick, sometimes it just gives the detainee more reason not to say anything. If any severe harm is reported, then our government can get into trouble and it can create extra problems with our ally. But other than that I see no real problems with this method. Yes torturing is kinda drastic, but sometimes in order to finish first, you have to take off the gloves and say "no more Mr. Nice Guy."

Declaration of War

   The tone of the United States Declaration of War seemed urgent. The words that really revealed this tone were "government", "right", "imperial", and "German". This concrete diction showed the urgency and need for us Americans to join the war. To our protect our rights and to stop the imperial government of the Germans. I feel this tone was necessary in order to get the American people on the government's side and agree to join this war that really has nothing to do with us. The German's response on the other hand is much different. One of the most repeated words was "American Peace". I feel like the German's did not wish to go to war with us, I mean who can blame them? They would have rathered created peace with us, but of course we had to join a war especially one named the Great War.
